European voice in the UN Security Council.
Austria's non-permanent membership 2009/2010
Amidst discussions on a new role for the United Nations and on the possible introduction of a single European voice in the Security Council,
Mr. Spindelegger will share the experience of Austria as a 2009/2010 non-permanent member of the Security Council. With Vienna as one of the UN seats, Austria has always considered the United Nations as the primary centre for successful multilateral cooperation. It is the third time Austria holds a seat in the Security Council, but this time it is also a member of the European Union. The membership in the EU gives its role in the Security Council an additional European angle.
Michael Spindelegger assumed the office of Austrian Foreign Minister in December 2008. Before, he served as a Member of the European Parliament and of the Austrian Parliament where he represented the Austrian People's Party. He holds a PhD in law.
