Exhibition:
Wind Blurs Lines. Marie-Andrée Pellerin
Wind Blurs Lines by Marie-Andrée Pellerin is presented at the Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw as part of the accompanying programme of the International Festival of Contemporary Music Warsaw Autumn.
The exhibition's titular sound installation, Wind Blurs Lines, metaphorically illustrates and directly sonifies extreme weather conditions. It focuses on the relationship between atmospheric conditions, changing weather patterns, and mental states. The installation is inspired by The Wind (1928), directed by Victor Sjöström. This classic silent film depicts its protagonist's struggle with relentless winds and sandstorms on a semi-arid expanse in West Texas, as she gradually descends into a state of psychological instability.
Pellerin began developing the project during an artist residency in Warsaw in 2025 and a research trip to the Tatra Mountains, where she was inspired by the halny, a powerful föhn wind characteristic of the region. In local folklore, this naturally occurring meteorological phenomenon is believed to influence mental well-being and give rise to episodes of so-called “halny madness.” Drawing on traditions that portray atmospheric conditions as reflections of psychological states and social crises, the installation reveals connections between everyday experience, the climate change, and instability of “political climates”. The audio composition is a central element of the installation. It links breathing with wind to show how environmental forces shape inner states, suggesting growing anxiety and intensity.
The exhibition not only brings together visual art and music, but also engages with this year's festival theme, Signs. The project continues the artist's long-standing interest in meteorology, particularly the visual language of weather forecasting and the sonic dimension through which atmospheric conditions are communicated and represented.
Meteorological reports rely on a system of conventional signs used to describe weather patterns and atmospheric phenomena. These symbols form a complex, highly codified, and universal language that, beyond conveying information, can also evoke emotions associated with changing weather conditions. This language can also be approached as a kind of musical score, in which graphic representations of atmospheric fronts, winds, and clouds seem to anticipate the sounds associated with them or used to evoke them. The textile works presented in the exhibition freely interpret this visual language.
