Klaus Obermaier and Stefano D’Alessio
Masterclasses in Interactive Projection Mapping
30. International Festival of Dance Theaters in Lublin
The workshops are aimed at dancers and choreographers interested in working independently with interactive media, as well as artists working in the field of new media art; the ideal scenario is for dancers and choreographers to collaborate with media artists, enabling an exchange of different perspectives and skills.
The workshops focus on effective and easy-to-master strategies for creating body-engaging interactions that combine movement, sound and image.
We will be working mainly in the Max/MSP environment, using a dedicated library as well as cameras, microphones and a Kinect sensor.
Participants will learn how to transform simple movements and gestures into interactions with audiovisual material – without the need for prior, extensive experience in programming or working with interactive media.
Workshop components:
• Recording short videos (approx. 5–20 seconds) depicting dance movements.
• Exploring different ways of interacting with these recordings and transforming them through movement.
• Creating and recording your own sounds to be used in the interactions.
• Experimenting with movement- and voice-based interaction using techniques such as face, body posture and hand tracking, as well as motion detection.
• Working with cameras, microphones and the Kinect sensor to explore various forms of body-based interaction.
• Developing short, interactive audiovisual sketches to be presented on the final day of the workshop.
Since more than three decades interdisciplinary artist, director and composer Klaus Obermaier (born 1955 in Linz, Austria) creates innovative works with new media in performing arts, music and installations, highly acclaimed by critics and audience. Many of his projects, such as the EGO presented in Lublin, D.A.V.E, APPARITION, LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS, or DANCING HOUSE presented also in Lublin in the public space, are considered groundbreaking and genre-defining for the development of new artistic forms of human interaction with digital systems.
Klaus Obermaier was visiting professor at the University IUAV of Venice/Italy and at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca/Romania teaching interactive arts and performances. He taught as an adjunct professor for composition at the Webster University Vienna and held courses for choreography and new media at the Accademia Nazionale di Danza di Roma. From 2016 to 2018 he was co-director of the Master for Advanced Interaction at IAAC (institute for advanced architecture of Catalonia) in Barcelona.
