Lecture:
About Christine de Pizan

Christine de Pizan was a writer, poet, literary critic and philosopher employed at the court of the French King Charles V. Her work boldly addressed women's issues, engaging in arguments in counterpoint to the misogynistic texts of her time. She is considered a forerunner of feminism. In her book “Le Livre de la Cité des Dames” (“The Book of the City of Ladies”), completed in 1405, she created a true herstory, building a metaphorical city made up of women's histories over the centuries. Prof. Monika Leisch-Kiesl is an author of 'Lady Reason and the Writing of History. Christine de Pisan's «Le Livre de la Cité des Dames»''. In her book she describes, in a remarkable way, the visual, historical and philosophical contours of Christine de Pisan's book.

Prof. Monika Leisch-Kiesl:
My approach is an art-historical and aesthetic one - aesthetics understood as a special sensorium for the perception of reality. Five autographs of the "Livre de la cité des dames" (around 1405) have survived, which were artistically designed under the author's supervision and differ significantly from all later illustrated manuscripts. They impressively demonstrate to the reader how Christine de Pizan's scholarly writing and her political activities were intertwined.
