Rosalie Wanka has never felt committed to being XX just because she is XX. Society? Culture? Gender? Identity? Borders and concepts dissolve the more we keep on changing the perspective. What is behind our socially imposed avatar that bears our name? Who is actually willing to have a look at it, to grapple with it and with her/himself? Borders and concepts dissolve the more we keep on changing the perspective. The artist about her performance: I always wanted to do a solo dressed up as a tango lady, dancing all the fancy contemporary stuff, so here it is. My movement fluctuates between tango sensuality and the precision of semi acrobatic contemporary floor work. I feel - and actually have always felt - trapped, between an expectation of femininity I sometimes like to play with, and all those possibilities of movement I have thanks to my body, which get severely restricted by gender normative conventions (i.e. having to wear high heels).

My fascination lies in the observation of intra-human interactions beyond words and socio-cultural conventions. I am always wondering if communication is actually possible, and if dancing might be a way. In my artistic practice I work a lot with improvisation, as it seems to me to be 'the technique of life', for all our technical tools and skills are useless if we can't spontaneously apply and use them to our advantage in a given situation or context. https://www.rosaliewanka.com

International Solo Dance Contest 
147 solo performances from 42 countries were submitted to the competition held as part of the 15th Gdańsk Dance Festival. Club Żak invited 20 outstanding dancers to show their solos.
The jury of the competition comprises artistic personalities and experts in contemporary dance: Edyta Kozak - artist and curator of Polish and European dance projects, Johanna Ikola - Finnish choreographer and artistic director of Full Moon Dance Festival and Andreas Constantinou - performer, creator of many award-winning performances and initiator of dance projects. The competition includes 3 Jury prizes and an Audience Award, which total amount is €6,000. The finalists of the competition will be announced on September the 8th.
