Telematic art
Echtzeitkunstwelt – VR Palace
Authors of the project Echtzeitkunstwelt: Renate Kreil, Dominik Grünbühel i Norbert Unfug aka Martin Chiettini
Partners: Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Kòniclab from Barcelona, Axis Cactus Foundation, Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw.
The Echtzeitkunstwelt project is implemented by the Austrian research centre ACOnet, which is part of the Austrian National Research and Education Network (NREN) for science, research, education, art and culture.

We would like to invite you to the final presentation of the telematic art Echtzeitkunstwelt, which will be the culmination of the June workshops in Poznań! The event will consist of 3 dance etudes, prepared by dancers from Austria working under the supervision of Dominik Grünbühel from the University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna and dancers from Poland led by Paulina Wycichowska from the Department of Dance at the Eugeniusz Piasecki University School of Physical Education in Poznań.

The dance performances will be realised in telematic form and will take place in two locations simultaneously – at the General Dabrowski Palace in Winna Góra and in Vienna, connected to each other through the technology of virtual reality. Both performers and audience will be able to interact with each other in real time, moving between 3 levels of the multimedia performance experience: 1) in a virtual 3d space via VR and AR goggles, 2) through responsive, external video projections and 360 sound, 3) directly, by experiencing the performance live on stage.

An original aspect of the project is the use of the advanced virtual reality engine Unreal Engine and the network module developed by the Austrian research centre ACOnet, which allows artists to create music and performative actions together without delays or restrictions. The entire performance space is generated in workstations at the two institutions, and only ‘light’ and ‘fast’ interaction information – e.g. movement data read out by the movement sensors of the performers – is transmitted over the network. This way, multi-channel music and sound can be generated, as well as realistic 3d images that can be freely arranged in both locations during shows that are open to the public. Dancers can see each other through VR goggles and interact with each other based on a realistic representation of their bodies and movements in the virtual environment.
