The Vitruvian Human
Hungry Sharks in the finals of the 12th choreography competition 3…2…1…TANIEC! / Cracow Dance Festival
Concept / Choreographie: Valentin Alfery
Dance: Alexander Tesch
Duration: 11 min.

In his drawing of the Vitruvian Human Leonardo da Vinci describes idealized body dimensions in relation to the circle and square. This portrait is the artistic starting point and becomes an object of investigation for the solo performer. The pursuit of ideals and the failure of perfection become the mainspring for dance, choreography and improvisation.

Choreographer Valentin Alfery and producer Dusana Baltic founded the dance company Hungry Sharks in 2011. In order to establish urban dance styles in theatres, the company regularly produces feature-length, urban dance pieces for international performances. They perform their productions in Austria, Germany, USA, Spain, Turkey, Italy, UK, Croatia, Romania, Sweden and Sri Lanka.

The Vitruvian Man (Italian: L'uomo vitruviano; [ˈlwɔːmo vitruˈvjaːno]) is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1490. Inspired by the writings of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, the drawing depicts a nude man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed in both a circle and square. Described by the art historian Carmen C. Bambach as "justly ranked among the all-time iconic images of Western civilization", the work is a unique synthesis of artistic and scientific ideals and often considered an archetypal representation of the High Renaissance.

Held as part of the Krakow Dance Festival, the choreographic competition 3...2...1...DANCE! is an international event that presents short solo forms, duets and trios based on contemporary dance in the broadest sense. Although 3...2...1...DANCE! has a competitive character, the basic idea of the event is dialogue. First of all, in the form of a post-competition conversation, when the jurors discuss with the participants and the audience the works presented and discuss choreography in general. The competition at KCC is rather a review than a confrontation. We allow artists to interact with a professional jury and start an open conversation, so that we inspire each other with different ways of looking at and constructing dance.
