Curator’s tour over exhibition
Transposition
The curator’s tour offers a closer look at the stories embedded in the artifacts, recordings, and artworks. It invites exploration of the layered narratives that reveal how transgender individuals perceived themselves across different historical moments. From forgotten stories unearthed in archives to contemporary voices, the tour will highlight the interplay between archival materials and new narratives, reflecting on the evolution of language and the collective awareness of the transgender community.
The tour will be led by curators Simona Kasprowicz, Emilia Wiśniewska, and Alina Synakiewicz.
About the exhibition
The exhibition was designed primarily with the transgender community in mind, offering an opportunity to explore its history, uncover new perspectives, and delve into personal genealogies. It seeks to empower individuals with tools for self-discovery, encourage curiosity, and satisfy the growing desire within the community to connect with their local historical roots.
Transposition is both the voice and memory of the transgender community, captured through personal stories, artifacts, and visual works. It is a space where personal recollections, archival materials, and contemporary art intersect, creating narratives that reflect the evolution of self-perception, language, and storytelling within the transgender experience. These narratives, part of a continually expanding collective story, also provide a platform for exploring what is often overlooked or forgotten—diverse trans histories and the evolving language and awareness of the community as a whole.
The exhibition showcases works by transgender artists engaging in dialogue with historical materials sourced from the Lambda Archive, the Trans-Fuzja Foundation, and private collections. Archival recordings of past Miss Trans competitions transport viewers to earlier eras that resonate with the present. Selected excerpts from project interviews highlight intimate, individual stories, providing glimpses into Warsaw’s transgender past.
This is a story of social and cultural life intertwined with activism, where key events like the founding of Trans-Fuzja and Anna Grodzka’s election to Parliament coexist with memories of trans gatherings, support groups, and early collective initiatives. Together, these fragments allow visitors to shape their understanding of transgender history and its intersection with personal narratives.
